The birds-driving-off festival at Nakanojo. Where will the birds go driven off? What will they do there? I hear Choei Takano, the pioneer Western scholar at the end of Edo period, escaping from Bansha no goku(Inprisonment of scholars of Western leaning), temporarily hid at Kuni-mura. These two key words connected in me and brought me the theme ”A Fugitive” or “The Pale Flares Which Dwell in All the Minorities’ Souls.” During these three months’ Artist in Regidence program, I have worn the fugitive’s soul as my garment as if I were a fugitive myself, and created hideouts of them and of my own. As birds make their nests out of twigs and feathers, I wove my own nest out of faint murmurs and words unspoken.
